Conceived in the spirit of the EU policy to develop an integrated European Research Area, the European Consortium for Asian Field Study, ECAF, is a unique alliance of leading European and Asian institutions active in the field of Asian studies.
Its principal mission is to provide field access and study facilities to European scholars through the sharing of a network of twenty-three research centres across Asia and to encourage joint interdisciplinary research programmes in the humanities and social sciences.
At a time when Asia is developing into one of the most influential regions in the world, ECAF aims to act as a forum for enhanced Euro-Asian dialogue and to encourage the exchange and dissemination of knowledge about Asian societies and civilizations.
Founded in 2007, at the initiative of the Ecole Française d'Extrême-Orient, the ECAF Consortium is incorporating in 2013-2014 as an autonomous legal entity. Within the new Public Interest Group for Asian Field Study "GIP ECAF", 28 French and international partner institutions collaborate to develop joint research and mobility programs, as well as pooling field resources and infrastructures.
