The EFEO Centre in Hanoi serves as a link between French and international scholars and their Vietnamese colleagues in the humanities and social sciences. The Centre's research interests lie in pre-modern and contemporary history, epigraphy, anthropology, and archaeology.

- Inventory and publication in collaboration with the Han-Nôm Institute of the complete corpus
of stele inscriptions of Vietnam in Sino-Vietnamese (40 000 rubbings)
- The extent of the Dai-Viêt Kingdom : migrations, contacts, and transformation mechanisms
of societies and territory, including the “long wall” of Quang Ngai
- History of inter-ethnic relations in the north and the Lao Cai rock inscriptions
- Expertise on the Thang-Long imperial city site in Hanoi
- Anthropology of relations between the state and the peasantry in water management
