The EFEO Centre in Hanoi serves as a link between French and international scholars and their Vietnamese colleagues in the humanities and social sciences. The Centre's research interests lie in pre-modern and contemporary history, epigraphy, anthropology, and archaeology.

Principal activities

  • Inventory and publication in collaboration with the Han-Nôm Institute of the complete corpus
    of stele inscriptions of Vietnam in Sino-Vietnamese (40 000 rubbings)
  • The extent of the Dai-Viêt Kingdom : migrations, contacts, and transformation mechanisms
    of societies and territory, including the “long wall” of Quang Ngai
  • History of inter-ethnic relations in the north and the Lao Cai rock inscriptions
  • Expertise on the Thang-Long imperial city site in Hanoi
  • Anthropology of relations between the state and the peasantry in water management
  • Archaeology of the Mekong delta (Oc Eo excavations)
