The branch office in New Delhi was established in 1963 – at the same time the South Asia Institute was founded in Heidelberg. Its main task is "building bridges" between India and Germany.

Principal activities

  • strengthening partnerships between Indian scholars and academic institutions
    and the South Asia Institute
  • supporting the Memoranda of Understanding signed between the University of Heidelberg
    and various Indian partner institutions
  • promoting collaboration between local German and Indian institutions
  • administering the Baden-Württemberg Fellowship
  • promoting the work of the South Asia Institute in India
  • organizing lectures, seminars, and workshops in the fields of the humanities, social sciences,
    and cultural studies
  • publication of our series "South Asia Studies"
  • procuring books, journals, and other research materials for the library of the South Asia Institute.
